Partnership to invent new career opportunities
Special open day at the College’s Shiney Row Campus on Tuesday 9th February
A strategic higher education collaboration has been founded to boost the number of graduates entering the North East’s flourishing science sector.
Through a partnership between City of Sunderland College and the University of Sunderland, students interested in pharmaceutical, biomedical and sports sciences are being invited to enrol on the Joint Scheme of Extended Programmes (Level 0) in Science.
The year-long course provides fundamental scientific concepts and appropriate laboratory techniques in conjunction with study skills, to allow progression to University, as well as building student confidence and self-esteem.
Course leader, Derek Thompson, feels that the programme is ideal for students with a non scientific background wishing to retrain in the area. “The past twelve to eighteen months has rocked many of our regional industries but the science sector has continued to grow and prosper,” he said.
“There are some fantastic career opportunities available in North East England for graduates in this sector. Together, we are offering a learning pathway to help young people retrain and progress into higher education to take advantage of some fantastic career prospects.”
During a special open day at the College’s Shiney Row Campus on Tuesday 9th February, College and University staff will be on hand to discuss the new course and how it can help students to progress to the degree of their choice. Student Services will be available to discuss the financial implications of becoming a higher education student.
North East England is establishing a reputation as a national centre of excellence in healthcare and life sciences. With an annual turnover of £4bn, healthcare and life sciences is one of the most important drivers of the regional economy.
