Post your Events New Howard Street Bridge Opening
Main design and build contractor for the New Tyne Crossing, Bouygues Travaux Publics, has completed construction of the new Howard Street road bridge as part of the redevelopment of the south junction in Jarrow.
The new road bridge will open to traffic by Thursday 11th February, giving motorists a chance to “test drive” the first of the new road structures being built under the New Tyne Crossing project.
The existing Howard Street Bridge, which crosses the A19 above the Tyne Tunnel, is being replaced by the new road bridge as part of the restructuring of the area around the tunnel accesses. The new road bridge is wider and higher than the bridge it replaces, enabling traffic to move more easily around the junction.
Pedestrians and cyclists have been able to use the replacement Howard Street road bridge since the start of January. Now motorists will be able to enjoy the experience from Thursday. The existing road bridge has been closed to vehicles for approximately six weeks so that construction works could be completed. Demolition of the original bridge will take place later this year.
Nicolas Caille, Project Managing Director for Bouygues Travaux Publics, said: “The snow and freezing conditions at the start of the year created some challenges for us while we tried to complete the finishing works on the new road bridge. However we’ve been able to make excellent progress despite these exceptional conditions. I’m very pleased with the end result.”
Trevor Jackson, Managing Director of Tyne Tunnel Concessionaire TT2, said: “With the new road bridge open to vehicles we can now move onto the next phase of development at this complex junction. Through careful traffic management we’re keeping our customers’ journey times down while we complete building works around the site. There are some exciting changes planned for this year, and I hope the travel experience will get better and better for people travelling through the south junction as we progress with our works.”
Paul Fenwick, project director for the scheme's promoter, the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority, said: "The reopening of Howard Street Bridge is another significant milestone towards the completion of the project. I would like to thank drivers and local people for their forbearance during the closure and hope they look forward to enjoying the benefits of the new bridge."
