Stand … and deliver

There’s never a better time or place to shout about the merits of exhibiting at major trade shows than in the midst of the leading international meetings and conference exhibition, Confex.

At International Confex 2010, at London’s Earl’s Court over three days until February 25, NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau is doing just that after winning two major conferences at the show last year.

NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, the team tasked with bringing major conferences to the destination, secured a double business boost at the show in 2009, with NUS’ annual conferences for 2010 and 2011 secured for the ‘twin cities’, amongst other business successes.

The team met NUS’ Conference Manager, Sacha Zarb, at their stand at last year’s event, which led to delivering its flagship annual conferences at The Sage Gateshead in April 2010 and 2011, with an estimated economic impact to the regional economy of over £1.5m.  The revenue generated by both conferences will benefit local hotels, venues, restaurants, shops and transport providers.  If the Convention Bureau had not attended International Confex 2009, this lucrative and high-profile business win may never have happened.

Jessica Roberts, Head of Business Tourism at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “This big business success illustrates clearly the economic value of exhibiting at major trade shows. As well as enabling us to build on our reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting and innovative conference destinations, exhibitions and tradeshows account for around 11% of business the Convention Bureau brings to NewcastleGateshead.”

Sacha Zarb, NUS Conference Manager, said: “It was ideal for us to meet face to face with this inspiring, exciting destination at this major, international show last year. Seeing the Convention Bureau team and getting a sense of the place and all it offered as a conference destination was a hugely convincing factor in sealing the deal. We’re looking forward to holding our flagship conferences at The Sage Gateshead this year and next.”

NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau has also launched its brand-new Conference Guide at International Confex 2010.  The guide is published biennially and is a key platform of the Convention Bureau’s marketing activity, sent directly to the Bureau’s extensive database both nationally and internationally.

The guide is also available at all trade shows attended by the Bureau and the team is delighted that several of the venues featuring in the guide are on stand B220 at Confex this year.  It is the highest ever number of stand partners at the show and comprises: Hilton Newcastle Gateshead, Newcastle United Football Club, Newcastle University, Radisson BLU Hotel, Durham, Ramside Estates, Rockliffe Hall, The Sage Gateshead and Event Durham. Together, they all combine to provide London with a distinctive taste of North East charm, quality, and diversity.
