City of Sunderland College students are all stars!

Six high-achieving City of Sunderland College students are ‘seeing stars’ after gaining one or more A* grades at A level, tallying up an outstanding 15 A*s between them.

The College is once again celebrating exceptional results with an overall pass rate of 99%. An impressive 21 students across its three sixth form centres - Bede Sixth Form, St Peter’s Sixth Form and Usworth Sixth Form – achieved the new A*  grades as well as hundreds of top grade individual results.

Bede Sixth Form student, Rachael Bailey, 18 from Sunderland, worked hard to score three A*s and one A at A level. She will now go on to study English at Cambridge University.

She said: “I can breathe a sigh of relief now! It’s been hard work but I’m thrilled with my results. I don’t think I could have got this far without support from my friends and the staff at the College. My lecturers have been so supportive and I’ve always enjoyed my lessons and time here, so this is truly a fantastic leaving present!”

Another Bede Sixth Form student, Faye Hamm, 18 also from Sunderland, achieved three A* star grades in Biology, Chemistry and Maths.

She said: “Wow! I was really nervous this morning before the results came through but it’s finally sinking in! It’s great news that I got the results I needed and have confirmed my place at the University of Sunderland to study Pharmacy.”

A* grades which have been introduced in 2010, identify those who achieve 90% or above in their second year and have been sought after by students who want to stand out as the crème de la crème among the thousands of learners applying for coveted university spaces.

St Peter’s student, Natalie Rudd, 18 from Seaham, who achieved two A*s in Law and English Literature, one A in Psychology and an A in AS-level Philosophy, acknowledged the stiff competition for places this year.

She said: “It’s a tough time for students at the minute, so I’m thrilled I have been accepted at Newcastle University to study English.

“As well as the pressure of waiting for results this year, we’ve also had to be mindful of a shortage of spaces at university. I’m very pleased to have done so well and wish the best of luck to everyone else getting their results.”

Usworth student, Alex Povey topped the board by achieving four A* grades and will continue his studies at Cambridge University to study Mathematics.

Other high achievers include Usworth’s Charlotte Rolfe and Bede student, Nathan Reed who both achieved an A* each in their results.

For Nigel Harrett, Head of Bede Sixth Form, this was an especially emotional results day as it was his final A level results as a Head of Sixth Form. From September, he will move onto his new position of Vice Principal of Curriculum and Student Support at the College.

Nigel said: “We are thrilled with this year’s results, in particular with the significant jump in the number of subjects achieving a 100% pass rate.

“Well done to everyone who received their grades today and our first ever A* students who I’m sure must be elated! They’ve certainly got a bright future ahead of them and we wish them the best of luck.”

John Anderson, Head of Usworth and St Peter’s Sixth Form, said: “A big thank you to all of our teachers and staff, as these results are a reflection of their continued dedication and hard work.

“City of Sunderland College has a massive cohort of students, the largest in Sunderland and we are extremely proud to be building on our success year-on-year.”
