A couple of A-level stars!

A young couple who met while studying at City of Sunderland College have passed their A-levels with flying colours.

Faye Hamm and James Ingram, both 18 from Sunderland, met when they began studying on a Maths course at the College’s Bede Sixth Form.

Together, they are celebrating excellent grades which have secured their places at two of the region’s top universities.

Faye has successfully achieved three A* star grades in Biology, Chemistry and Maths and will now go on to study Pharmacy at the University of Sunderland. James also scored highly with three A grades in Maths, Physics and Geography and will be starting at Durham University, studying for a Degree in Engineering from September.

High achieving certainly runs in the family, as Faye's older brother, Michael achieved four A grades at A-level in 2006 while studying at the College. Michael also went on to study at the University of Sunderland and achieved a first class honours degree.

Faye said: “We both wanted to study in the region so we’re thrilled with our results, having secured university places.

“We were very mindful of the shortage this year, so I’m pleased that we’ve both got through. There’s definitely a sense of relief now.

“I’m interested in becoming a hospital pharmacist so I’m really excited to start my new course in September and pick up some new skills!”

James said: “Both of us thought the other would get better results and I’m so proud of Faye for achieving three A*s which was great news! There was no rivalry between us, honest!

“I’m really happy with the subjects I took at A-level. They are all quite tough and some people wouldn’t go for a maths and science mix, but I think they’ll take me far and give me great job prospects for the future.”

Both Faye and James were part of the College’s High Achievers Programme which involves specialist tuition, interview preparation and university visits to help the students make decisions on what and where they want to study.

The programme is designed to make sure that bright learners get the highest grades possible in their A-level subjects, to ensure that they are able to gain entry to the most prestigious universities. Over 80 full-time students at the College benefit from the programme each year.

James added: “The High Achievers Programme really helps you to see what you want to get from your education. The staff were really supportive and offered great advice on the university application process. I think all of us really benefited from the programme.”

This year, the College is once again celebrating exceptional results with an overall pass rate of 99%. An impressive 21 students across its three sixth form centres - Bede Sixth Form, St Peter’s Sixth Form and Usworth Sixth Form – also achieved one or more of the new A*  grades as well as hundreds of top grade individual results.

For Nigel Harrett, Head of Bede Sixth Form, this was an especially emotional results day as it was his final one as a Head of Sixth Form. From September, he will move onto his new position of Vice Principal of Curriculum and Student Support at the College.

Nigel said: “As always, our excellent pass rate and high grades showcases the hard work of our students as well as our staff, who have consistently delivered a high-class educational experience to help our students onto further success.

“Well done to both Faye and James who received their top grades I’m sure they must be very pleased! They’ve certainly got a bright future ahead of them and we wish them the best of luck.”
