A new £3million golf clubhouse at the George Washington Golf and Country Club officially opened its doors on Tuesday 3rd June. The Washington-based hotel has completed the second phase of a multi-million pound redevelopment. The new facility comprises of locker and changing facilities, function room, lounge bar, golf shop and an outdoor balcony overlooking the first and tenth tees.

The 150-seater function room includes the latest audio-visual technology, plus free WIFI and a private bar.  The 100sqm golf shop stocks a wide range of golfing equipment and apparel from Ping and Woodworm to Titleist and Mizuno.  The highlight of the new build is the investment in the male and female changing rooms with high quality fixtures and fittings and solid oak lockers.

Hotel owner, Mukesh Chawla states; “When we bought the hotel 5 years ago it was run down and very tired. It had changed hands many times over the years but nobody was prepared to commit to refurbishing the property. The golfers have never had proper locker and changing rooms so it’s wonderful to finally deliver on 30 years of empty promises by previous owners.”

Although the building opened in late-April, the Mayor of Sunderland officially cut the ribbon on 3rd June. Local suppliers and clients attended the opening launch party and bid in a charity auction to raise funds for the National Victims Association (NVA). 20 new food and beverage jobs have been created since the new building opened.

Kathryn Common, Business Development Manager comments; “There are any number of 4-star hotels and golf clubs in the region, we are now able to offer our customers state-of-the-art golfing facilities plus excellent value for money.”

The hotel has transformed during the last 5 years with the refurbishment of bedrooms, the restaurant, brasserie, bar and the opening of Montana hair and beauty.  With the second phase complete, work will begin in 2009 on a 600-seater conference and banqueting suite before finally adding a further 43 bedrooms in 2010.

Kathryn Common states; “We still have a long way to go but now our customers benefit from all our hard work with newly refurbished bedrooms, public areas and free WIFI.”
